QUININE DIHYDROCHLORIDE INJECTION BP 300 MG/ ML
QUININE SULPHATE TABLET USP 300 MG

Quinine is a prescription drug used as an antimalarial drug indicated only for treatment of uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria. Quinine sulphate has been shown to be effective in geographical regions where resistance to chloroquine has been documented.


COMPOSITION

Each ml contains: -

Quinine Dihydrochloride BP …300 mg

Water for Injection BP … q.s

Each Film coated tablet contains:

Quinine Sulphate USP 300 mg

 

DOSAGE

For Oral Tablet
Adults (including elderly):
The recommended dose is 200mg at bedtime. The maximum dose is 300mg.
A reduction in frequency of leg cramps may take up to 4 weeks to become apparent. Patients should be monitored closely during the early stages of treatment for adverse effects. After an initial trial of 4 weeks, treatment should be stopped if there is no benefit. Treatment should be interrupted at approximately three-monthly intervals to assess the need for continuation of treatment with quinine.

For I.V Injection
Usual adult dose and adolescent dose: -
Intravenous (if an infusion pump is available), 7 mg per kg of body weight over thirty minutes followed immediately by 10 mg per kg of body weight diluted in 210 ml per kg isotonic fluid over four hours, repeated every 8 hours until oral treatment can be instituted. Or intravenous (if an infusion pump is not available), 20 mg per kg of body weight over 4 hours followed immediately by 10 mg per kg of body weight diluted in 10 ml per kg isotonic fluid over 4 hours, repeated every 8 hours until oral treatment can be instituted.

SIDE EFFECT
The most commonly reported side-effects of Quinine Dihydrochloride Injection are dryness or cracking of the skin, severe allergic reactions, and irritation.
Other common side effects may include:
Headache, blurred vision, changes in colour vision; sweating or flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling); mild dizziness, spinning sensation, ringing in your ears; or upset stomach, vomiting, stomach pain.




PRECAUTION

Quinine must be used with caution in patients with atrial fibrillation or other serious heart diseases. Quinine must be stopped immediately if evidence of haemolysis appears. Antimalarial agents and especially quinine, when given for prolonged periods, have been implicated in precipitating black water fever. However, in some cases, deficiency of glucose -6-phosphate.

Quinine Dihydrochloride Injection 300 mg is available in 10 ampoules of 2 ml / box.
Quinine Sulphate Tablet is available in Alu-PVC blister pack of 10 tablets.
